Embellished and dyed. I did a little experiment, I embellished a load of white bits of stuff onto a base of white pre-felt http://www.winghamwoolwork.co.uk/ then dyed it using acid dyes in the microwave. The different fibres sucked up the dye in different ways so I now have a textured base to stitch into. I used a combination of pink, turquoise and violet dyes.

Wow, that looks good. Did you paint on the color carefully or splash it around?
:D
The dye comes in crystal form and I just sprinkled them on randomly.
Poured water and white vinegar over, bunged it into my old (not used for cooking) microwave and let it cook.
Great idea Wendy. I haven't used the microwave yet for dyeing embellished pieces but I have used the cold water method. I find that they seem to come up really soft, much softer than if you use pre-dyed fibres. Did your piece have the same effect?
It is still very soft, I was careful not to felt it so it will need either lots of stitching or a backing or it may pull apart or wear. If I had used pre-dyed stuff I would have carefully put a bit here and balanced it with a bit there, this way I get a more random/organic piece.
